Montana Week in Review
Oct 24th, 2008 by Kirsten
I think I’ll give a little weekly Montana report a try for a while. It shouldn’t be too long before I’m off schedule, but for now:
Weather
This week in southwest Montana it has been chilly but fairly dry. Snow is still hanging around- probably until next spring- in the mountains above me, but today I’m running around in a short-sleeved t-shirt with a reserve jacket in tow. I’m hoping for at least one more week of this great weather.
News
Poll finds Obama, McCain race tight
Montana could go for the Democratic presidential candidate for the first time in sixteen years. This state is not as Republican as many people assume. We have a Democratic governor, and both of our Senators are Democrats.
Last Shot
Deer and elk hunting season (firearms anyway, I believe bow-hunting has been in progress for a few weeks) opens Sunday. Here is an inspiring tale of one of Montana’s great hunters- and 81-year-old lady contemplating what she expects to be her last hunt.
Wolf pack to be removed near Philipsburg
4 wolves killed after 2nd attack
Hunting will not include a wolf season this year. However, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks has authorized the lethal removal of an aggressive wolf pack in my area due to a chronic livestock harassment and depradation problem. Other wolves were also recently killed in another pack further away for cattle depradation.
Montana Trivia
Pearl Jam bassist and solo musician Jeff Ament was born in Havre, MT. He currently splits his time between Seattle, WA and Missoula, MT. That probably explains why Montana is (seems like frequently, but I won’t swear to it) privileged to be on Pearl Jam’s tour schedules.
Montana Picture of the Week
Kayakers at Brennan’s Wave on the Clark Fork River in downtown Missoula running right through Caras Park. Photo taken from the bridge on Higgins.

Nice pic. Reminds me of where I used to live. Are those narrow-leaf cottonwood along the other side of the river?
The kayaking looks like SO MUCH FUN! I’m just going to live my life vicariously through people who have either a pink or green kayak (both of which I see on your completely awesome picture, there). When I get up there, you and I are SO TOTALLY going kayaking. Just sayin’.
And good luck to the ranchers who are having issues with livestock depredation. Bah. No fun.
